David Pashley.com is a static archive. There are no accounts, no logins, no forms and no comment box — nothing on these pages asks you for information, and there is nowhere for you to submit any.

What is counted

Visits are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It records the page requested, the referring page, an approximate country and browser performance timings. Cloudflare states that its measurement script does not store or read anything on your device — no cookies, no localStorage, no sessionStorage, no IndexedDB — and does not retain your IP address. There is nothing to opt out of, because nothing about you is stored or followed between visits.

Google Analytics

This site also has a Google Analytics property, which has been collecting visit statistics since long before this archive was built. Unlike the above, it does set cookies and can recognise a returning visitor, so it is switched off unless you allow it.

Google Analytics is not loaded at all until you choose to allow it. If you decline, or simply ignore the question, no request is made to Google from these pages.

Whether you are asked depends on where you appear to be. In the UK and Europe you are asked first and nothing loads until you answer. Elsewhere it may load without asking, which is the ordinary practice in those places — you can still turn it off at any time using theAnalytics preferences link in the footer.

Your answer is remembered in your browser's local storage for a year, after which you will be asked again. Clearing your browser storage also clears it. The choice is stored only on your device and is never sent anywhere.

Content from other sites

Some older posts embed or link to images and pages hosted elsewhere. Loading those means your browser contacts those third parties directly, and what they do is governed by their own policies rather than this one.

The archive itself

These pages were migrated from a WordPress site running at the same addresses. Comments left on the original site are reproduced as they were published, including the name and any website address the commenter chose to display at the time. Email addresses supplied with comments were never published and were not carried across.
